Stenciling the Screen Door on a Casita Travel Trailer

Stenciling a Screen Door

“It’s the little things that matter most.”ย

When I applied this saying to my Casita’s makeover, it turned out that one of the little things I did during the makeover, stenciling the screen door, had one of the most significant impacts on my camper’s overall charm ~ and it happened by accident.

I wandered the aisles at my local hobby store when I found a chandelier stencil perfect for a Glamper and immediately knew I had to have it.

I first thought of using the stencil on the camper’s closet door until I started looking at the screen door.

The chandelier was the perfect scale for the screen door, and since this is the camper’s entry door, I returned and purchased a “welcome” stencil.

I found my chandelier stencil (7 x 9 inches) at my local craft store, but if you can’t find one locally, you can order this one online:

    • This design is similar in look and scale (6 x 6 inches):

  • If you can’t find a Welcome stencil locally, here is a stencil similar to the one I used:

This project was simple and quick, with beautiful results!

Casita Screen with Stenciling Applied

I taped the stencils to the screen door (balanced by eye), then applied paint using a stencil brush. It is best to go lightly with the brush to avoid clogging the screen with paint. I applied a light coat, let it dry, and then applied another.

Once the paint was dry and the stencil removed, I put some paper on the screen’s backside to avoid spray getting into the camper, then quickly sprayed the white lettering with a clear varnish. The varnish will help protect it from any moisture/humidity.

Note: the paint will not show on the backside if you do not apply the paint too heavily.

I also found a cute vinyl cow sticker, which I added to a flat panel on the door, building on the “Free Range” farm fresh theme I created for the outside.

This chandelier stencil differs from the one I used but is similar in size and style. (affiliate link)

With the screen door complete, I soon discovered another surprise when I closed the camper’s outer door!

It turns out that the chandelier and welcome message can be seen through the glass, welcoming visitors while traveling along the highway or at the campsite. ๐Ÿ™‚

Well, I’m getting close to completing the Glamping makeover of my Casita Travel Trailer!

My next post will show you the window treatments I installed, which I made without sewing a single stitch!

Following that post, I will unveil the completed interior set up for camping and then move on to my bucket list and other fun DIY projects geared toward the outdoors. ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. I like this idea on the screen. I am looking forward in trying it.

    Thank you

    • Hi Dee. I’ve never used this product. My only concern with any spray paint is you would have to tape off the screen around the stencil to a width that overspray would not get on the screen. Also you would have to spray very lightly so not to clog the screen. I personally think I would just use a stencil brush and some craft paint.

      • Ok, I will get some acrylic white paint and some clear varnish spray. Does clear varnish spray only come in a spray can?

        • You can buy varnish in a can, but in this case (since it is clear) spray paint is best because you want to use VERY LIGHT sprays of varnish so it will go on light and not clog the screen. You will use so little varnish, you may want to see if a friend has a can with some varnish left before buying a full one. I do think you will find the craft paint the easiest to use for the stencil. Good luck with your project!

  2. Will you please email me whatever I need to get
To put the welcome stencil on my camper
    Screen door.

    • There is an affiliate link in the article where you can order the welcome stencil online if you are unable to find it at your local craft store. The only other items you need is some painters tape to hold the stencil on, a flat edged brush (stencil brush), and some white craft paint (or other color).

  3. Love what u did with the casita my sister Connie lang owns the company. Can’t wait to show her this

    • Thank you. ๐Ÿ˜Š Mine is the little brown egg from a carton on wonderful white Casita’s. Love this travel trailer!

    • I guess supply and demand? ๐Ÿ™‚ But I totally relate, which is why I purchased a used trailer…which gave me more restoration projects! ๐Ÿ™‚

Good luck on finding a trailer that is perfect for you! Thanks for stopping by.

  4. I’ve been looking for that exact chandelier stencil. Any ideas where I can find it? Cutest idea EVER!!!

  5. Loved your idea!! I had a stencil made that says “welcome to our home away from home”. Thanks for the easy to understand directions, I’m going to stencil my trailer’s screen today

  6. Just bought a new camper. Browsing Pinterest to Glamp it up suitably. Found you! Can wait to do the screen door. Will do mine yellow…have decided on torqouis and yellow colour combo. Thank you!

  7. Just found you’re website & love it. I’m always looking for new ideas for our camper. Can’t wait to stencil my screen door.

  8. What a fantastic idea! We bought a trailer last year and I can’t wait to stencil my screen door…didn’t even know this was an option!

    • Thank you. It’s such a simple project and makes a big impact. In fact, I have to say it is probably the most commented on project I did on my Casita. Enjoy your new trailer and happy Glamping! ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. MrsPadilly, I’m in love with your Casitas.i just retired from teaching and have been looking at the Casitas. Your glamped one caught my eye and now I just have to get one. I’m not as creative as you are. Are there companies that will decorate them for those of us who are lacking in our Martha Stewart talents? Here’s another question..Is my Toyato Prius too small to pull a 16″ Casita. LOVE YOUR BLOG

    • Hi Brenda!

I’m a retired teacher, too (four years)! I’m glad you like the makeover. As for companies that makeover camper’s for you, I’m sure there are some, but I do not know of any. BUT, there are so many good resources out there, you might learn you can do the makeover’s yourself (just start with the small projects). But the best part of a Casita travel trailer, in my opinion, they are great even without any “glamping!”

As for your Toyota Prius being able to pull a 16′ Casita, my gut is No. The car is probably not designed to tow. Castia’s are light (mine weighs a max of about 3,600 lbs, but I tow it with a Jeep that has a tow capacity of 7,000), but I think the reason your Pruis can’t tow is because the design of the car may not support a hitch? Sorry, I wish I could provide you more info, but I can’t. I would suggest you contact your local Toyota dealership.

I’m glad you found my blog helpful. Please let me know when you get your Casita! ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. Again, thanks for sharing the how-to on spiffing up the screen door! It looks lovely…

    • You are welcome, Rhonda. I have enjoyed reading all your comments, and hope to hear from you once you get your Casita and begin glamping her up. Just an FYI, I’ll be starting off the 2015 new year with the post on the unveiling of my camper, then I will move on to posting about glamping accessories and my glamping adventures. Hope to hear from you again.

  11. Did your Casita come the color that it is now? I would like to do a different color verses the current boring white. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Love you screen treatment!

    • We purchased the Casita already painted brown by the original owner (it has had only one owner before us). In fact, in another reply in my blog, and commenter asked if I purchased it near Houston, which I did. Apparently he saw the Casita and wanted to buy it, but when he called to inquire, they said it was sold. Then he somehow found my blog, and saw the Casita. LOL It’s a small world. ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Wow, it really is a small world! That’s so neat. ๐Ÿ™‚

  12. This is so stinking cute. I am loving it. What a wonderful idea and very creative. Chandy’s – well can a girl ever have to many? NO. Sweet makeover with lots of cuteness. Love how it shows through the window with the door closed.

    • As they say, Tonita, better late than never! Been traveling, and unable to blog the last month, but I’m back. I’m so glad you liked the screen door project. Personally, it was one of my favorites. I’m working on my window treatment post now, which should go up in the next few days. Close to the inside reveal in December. ๐Ÿ™‚ Hope all is well in the northwest!
